ABSTRACT : This study focuses on studying the effect of family transformations on the reproductive behavior of societies by analyzing the transition from the traditional extended family to the modern nuclear family and the associated sociodemographic changes as factors in the decline in birth rates, their subsequent recovery, and new downfalls. The study employs a descriptive-analytical research methodology based on collecting information from MIICS (2019) and World Bank databases, with emphasis on the national census data from 1966, 1977, 1987, 1998, 2008, as well as the fourth and fifth MICS surveys. The findings of the study demonstrate that changes in fertility levels in Algeria cannot be seen only as quantitative processes; instead, they should be regarded as a reflection of the fundamental social transformations occurring in this region. In particular, the transition from the extended to the nuclear family as a natural trend contributed to the redefinition of the family as a whole and the reorganization of reproductive behavior around these new foundations.
