Abstract: This study aims to trace the stages of the formation and development of modern Yemeni theatre and its social, political, and cultural transformations. It also seeks to highlight representations of reality, identify the challenges faced by Yemeni theatre, and explore its future prospects in light of the current challenges. The early beginnings of theatre, particularly poetic theatre, contributed to establishing a theatrical discourse that addressed the concerns and issues of society and national causes, before gradually evolving toward more mature and diverse dramatic forms. The beginnings of Yemeni theatre emerged in the city of Aden, owing to its cultural openness and interaction with social and political transformations. These beginnings were associated with the efforts of pioneering figures, notably Ali Ahmad Bakathir, alongside Ali Muhammad Luqman, Muhammad Abduh Ghanem, and Muhammad Al-Sharafi. The study is organized into three sections: the first examines Yemeni theatre and the question of its emergence and formation; the second addresses the poetic beginnings of Yemeni theatre; and the third explores the transformations of theatrical discourse. The study adopts the historical approach to trace the origins and development of Yemeni theatre, while drawing on the cultural approach to interpret the transformations of its theatrical discourse. The study concludes that the transformations of Yemeni theatre have been closely associated with the social, political, and cultural transformations that Yemen has undergone.
