This study investigates first-year EFL students’ perceptions of using ChatGPT in English homework tasks, focusing on perceived benefits, perceived risks, and ethical concerns. The researchers used a descriptive questionnaire-based design, supplemented by three open-ended questions. Data were collected onsite from 119 first-year EFL students, including 61 students from ENS Djelfa and 58 students from ENS Laghouat. The quantitative data were analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, Cronbach's alpha, an independent-samples t-test, and Cohen’s d, while the open-ended responses were analysed using thematic analysis. Students generally perceived ChatGPT as useful for improving vocabulary and grammar, generating ideas, saving time, understanding homework instructions, and organizing tasks. However, they demonstrated concerns about a lack of independent thinking, overdependence, inaccurate information, plagiarism, and copying answers without understanding. The comparison between students of ENS Djelfa and ENS Laghouat revealed no statistically significant differences in perceived benefits, perceived risks, or ethical perceptions and effect sizes were small. The findings indicated a very positive view about ChatGPT's role as a support tool, but there was less consensus about plagiarism and disclosure, suggesting a need for more explicit guidance on academic integrity policies.
