This article aims to investigate the defensive dynamics of an adolescent experiencing addiction to social media from a clinical psychoanalytic perspective by examining the psychological defense mechanisms utilized to cope with internal conflicts and emotional pressures. The study was based on the assumption that excessive engagement with social media may be associated with a specific defensive organization that reflects the characteristics of the adolescent’s psychological structure and serves a function in reducing psychological tension and regulating anxiety. The researcher adopted a clinical approach based on the case study method, using a semi-structured clinical interview and the administration of the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) as a projective instrument designed to explore unconscious contents and the underlying defense mechanisms operating within the personality. The protocol was analyzed from a dynamic perspective. The findings revealed the presence of a defensive organization characterized by the activation of several defense mechanisms, particularly denial, projection, rationalization, and fantasy, alongside indicators of narcissistic vulnerability, difficulties in emotional regulation, and challenges in the establishment of object relations. The results further indicated that intensive involvement with social media fulfills a defensive function in this case, contributing to the compensation of feelings of inadequacy and psychological loneliness, while also reducing the intensity of internal tension and conflicts, rather than constituting merely a recreational or entertainment-oriented behavior.
