This study examines one of the prominent Andalusian scholars in the agricultural field, Ibn Baṣṣāl of Toledo, who lived in the fifth century AH (the eleventh century AD), when the scientific movement flourished in al-Andalus, through his book Kitāb al-Filāḥa (The Book of Agriculture), which holds great significance and benefit for the Islamic West in general, and al-Andalus in particular, in the agricultural domain. The book was translated into several languages and represented the culmination of his scientific experiments and numerous travels. Indeed, this work served as an agricultural encyclopedia, comprising sixteen chapters, and its content was regarded as the agricultural principles of al-Andalus during that period. The organization and structure of this book followed the pattern of other Andalusian agricultural treatises: the first chapter dealt with water, its types, properties, and its effects on plants and soil, up to the fourth chapter, which Ibn Baṣṣāl dedicated to the indicators of soil quality—these being the four chapters examined in this study.
