Background. In recent years, the institution of the family in Russia has been undergoing significant transformation. Young people increasingly focus on personal development, career, and self-realization, which affects the perception of family as a life priority. Understanding how students — a key social group in the process of forming value orientations — perceive the family is important for sociological theory and for the development of youth and family policy. Objective. To study the characteristics of the attitude of students of Moscow universities towards family as a value, including the place of family in the hierarchy of life priorities, the semantic content of the value, gender differences, dynamics by year of study, and the role of the parental family and social environment. Methods. The study employed a mixed-method design. Quantitative data were collected through an online survey (N = 489) of students from leading Moscow universities (MSLU, MSU, HSE, RUDN, MAI, Financial University, Bauman MSTU, and others). Quota sampling controlled for gender and year of study. Qualitative data were obtained from 7 in-depth interviews. Results. The family occupies only fourth place in the actual hierarchy of current priorities (15.1%), yielding to self-realization (23.9%), education (22.5%), and career (20.9%). However, 50.1% of students rated the family as "important" or "extremely important" in an abstract assessment — a gap of 35 percentage points. The semantic core of the value consists of "love and support" (30.1%) and "security and stability" (25.0%). Gender differences are significant: female students more often highly rate the importance of family (56.5% vs. 41.4% for males, χ² = 14.27, p = 0.003) and emphasize love and support, whereas male students emphasize security and stability. Senior-year students demonstrate a more positive attitude towards family than junior-year students (55.9% vs. 45.8%, χ² = 9.87, p = 0.043). The optimal age for starting a family is 27.3 years on average. The main barriers are financial difficulties (55.0%), lack of housing (48.1%), and studies (45.0%). Students from families with warm, supportive relationships significantly more often highly rate the importance of family (58.2% vs. 38.0% from conflictual families, χ² = 11.84, p = 0.003). Conclusion. There is a key contradiction between the high declared importance of the family and its relatively low place in the real hierarchy of current priorities. The value of family among students is shaped by a complex interplay of socio-demographic factors (gender, year of study) and personal experience (parental family, own relationships, friends' experiences). Objective barriers (finances, housing, studies) postpone the practical realization of family plans to the period after graduation. The results contribute to understanding the transformation of family values in contemporary Russian society.
