This study examines whether generative AI systems reproduce gendered media narratives about Theresa May, focusing on the “Maybot” metaphor from the 2017 UK general election. It asks whether AI-generated news articles portray May as robotic, and emotionally detached, and how the double bind appears in these texts. Using qualitative discourse analysis, the study analyses nine AI-generated news-style articles produced by ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The analysis is guided by Critical Discourse Analysis and Feminist Post-Structuralist Discourse Analysis. Findings show that AI systems consistently reproduce the basic factual structure of May’s campaign but only weakly reproduce gendered interpretations. The “Maybot” framing appears rarely and mostly in implicit forms. Instead, AI texts tend to emphasise political strategy and campaign outcomes rather than personal traits. Overall, the study suggests that AI reproduces the events of political narratives more strongly than their gendered meanings. It contributes to research on gender, media representation, and algorithmic bias in political discourse.
