Reading motivation is widely recognized as a key factor influencing students’ engagement with reading activities in EFL contexts. Nevertheless, previous studies conducted in Algeria have frequently reported low levels of reading motivation among university learners. This quantitative descriptive study examines extrinsic reading motivation, conceptualizes as Reading to Do Well in Other Realms, among second-year EFL students at Khenchela University. Data were collected from 110 students using an adapted version of the Adult Reading Motivation Scale (ARMS). The findings revealed a moderate level of extrinsic reading motivation (M = 3.19, SD = 0.748), indicating that participants generally recognized the instrumental value of reading for academic and personal success. These findings challenge generalized assumptions of low motivation among Algerian EFL learners and highlight the importance of examining specific motivational dimensions independently.
