Teaching history in EFL classes is one of the challenges to teach history. This study focuses on incorporating humour to ease the teaching of history. It aims to delve deeper into the role of humour in history classes and to examine learners' attitudes towards its use. To this end, a mixed-method approach is adopted, employing quantitative methods via a questionnaire administered to 110 first-year students in the Department of English at Mascara University. Besides, a theoretical framework is incorporated for analysis; Self-determination theory (SDT) and Affective Filter Hypothesis. The findings reveal that humour is an important pedagogical tool for fostering motivation, improving teacher–student relationships, reducing anxiety and stress, and creating a positive classroom environment. The study argues that humour can be an effective strategy in history education when used appropriately and purposefully.
