Résumé

This study aims to analyze the effect of the funding goal level on the number of backers in crowdfunding platforms, using a sample of 100 projects published on Kickstarter. The study is based on the premise that the funding goal serves as an informational signal reflecting the project’s size, ambition, and the level of risk perceived by potential backers. A quantitative explanatory approach was adopted using cross-sectional data and statistical models appropriate for count data. Initially, a Poisson model was estimated; however, the overdispersion test indicated that it was not suitable, which required the use of the Negative Binomial Regression model as a more appropriate alternative for the nature of the data. The results show that the coefficient of the funding goal was positive but statistically insignificant, indicating the absence of sufficient evidence of a direct significant effect of the funding goal level on the number of backers. The findings also reveal that U.S.-based projects are associated with a higher number of backers, whereas technology projects are associated with a lower number of backers compared with the reference category. The study concludes that the number of backers is determined by a set of project-related and contextual characteristics rather than by the funding goal level alone.
