Motivation has always been an important issue in foreign language learning and teaching. In the current article, the effect of generative reading instruction on English language reading motivation and reading strategy use in Iranian medical students learning to read English medical texts was investigated. The participants were Iranian learners of medical English. They were at approximately pre-intermediate level and were required to pass English courses to be prepared for reading medical texts in English. In order to estimate the effect of generative strategy instruction on reading motivation and reading strategy use, participants completed L2 reading motivation and L2 reading strategy questionnaires before and after the instructions. Results suggest that generative reading instruction is a rewarding approach. Not only does it focus on meaningful and purposeful reading, but it also engages the L2 learners and enhances their strategic reading skills.
