Résumé

Abstract This article examines the engagement of reformist scholars with poetry and literature in the first half of the twentieth century, taking the experience of Muhammad al-Bashir al-Ibrahimi as a case study to clarify the reformist function of literary production within the modern reform project. It argues that reformist literature was not merely an aesthetic or expressive activity, but a comprehensive civilizational project that reconfigured literary discourse as a key instrument for shaping consciousness, resisting colonial domination, building national identity, and reinforcing Islamic identity. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology supported by a contextual historical approach and discourse analysis tools, focusing on selected examples from al-Ibrahimi’s poetry and prose, with particular attention to the essay and the sermon as representative genres. The findings reveal that reformist literature is structured around a tripartite framework: conscious production, purposeful deployment, and value-based evaluation grounded in Islamic reference. It functioned as a tool for civic education, civilizational mobilisation, and the formation of Islamic consciousness, contributing to both individual and social reform and to the production of the Nahda discourse.
