This study examines how Matvejević, through fragmentary and poetic writing, constructs a critical cartography of the Mediterranean as a space of conflictual coexistence. Reading the Mediterranean Breviary (1992) through literary hermeneutics, geopoetics, and cultural memory theory (Assmann, Ricoeur), it argues that the work constitutes a counter-discourse to dominant identity narratives by valorizing plurality, memory, and the circulation of knowledge. The methodology combines textual analysis, geopoetic reading, and the study of cultural memory. This triple lens reveals how Matvejević builds a literary counter-cartography of the Mediterranean, favoring circulations over borders and hybridizations over identity purisms. The Breviary epistemologically performs the cultural palimpsest, emerging as a laboratory of relational possibilities for rethinking intercultural dynamics in the Mediterranean. This study underscores the political relevance of literature as a space of resistance against essentialisms and identity-based rigidities.
