Résumé

The aim of this study is to explore the reading strategies used by EFL learners in reading literary texts to highlight the effective strategies and the less effective ones. The study involved three English major students at the university of Ahmed Ben Mohamed, Oran 2. They were selected according to their academic achievement level: a high achiever (HA), an average achiever (AA), and a low achiever (LA). Before conducting the study, the participants received a training on the think aloud protocol method with the researcher who was also their instructor. The method consisted in asking students to verbalize all their thoughts while they are reading a piece of literary text of medium difficulty. The verbal reports were followed by an interview. The data obtained suggests that these students differ in the strategies they use in reading literature. The study concludes with some recommendations and suggestions for the EFL literature teachers and course designers.
