Résumé

This study aims to analyze the impact of entrepreneurial education and research and development (R&D) transfer on early-stage entrepreneurial activity, while examining the extent to which this impact varies according to income level. To achieve this objective, the study relies on a balanced panel dataset drawn from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) for twenty countries over the period 2015–2024. Three estimation approaches were employed: the Between estimator, the Mundlak approach, and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) with country-clustered standard errors, alongside diagnostic and robustness tests to verify the stability of the results and the validity of the estimations. The findings reveal that entrepreneurial education has a strong, positive, and statistically significant effect on early-stage entrepreneurial activity in middle-income economies, whereas this effect weakens in high-income economies, which is consistent with the hypothesis of diminishing returns to entrepreneurial education. The estimations also indicate a negative relationship between R&D transfer and early-stage entrepreneurial activity in middle-income economies, thereby providing partial support for the entrepreneurial innovation paradox. In high-income economies, the results suggest a directional decline in the intensity of this negative effect; however, this change does not reach decisive statistical significance. The study concludes that the relationship between the components of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and early-stage entrepreneurial activity is not homogeneous across economies; rather, it is shaped by the developmental context and the level of institutional maturity. Accordingly, the study underscores the importance of designing entrepreneurship and innovation policies that take into account differences in income levels.
