Résumé

Vocabulary learning is crucial in EFL education for effective communication. Thus, with the advent of mobile devices and online platforms such as Quizlet, research has explored the benefits of mobile learning and gamification for vocabulary learning. However, most of this research on Quizlet has primarily focused on using pre-existing or teacher-created materials. In contrast, there has been relatively limited research on the impact of student-generated vocabulary learning via Quizlet flashcard sets. Accordingly, this study explores the vocabulary learning strategies used after learning new vocabulary via Quizlet. The study used an exploratory mixed-methods design and convenience sampling, including 43 EFL 6th-grade students at an international school in Saudi Arabia. The data were collected using content-based interviews and a questionnaire using students' generated vocabulary sets on Quizlet. The qualitative data were analyzed thematically using ATLASti 9, and SPSS 23 was used to analyze the questionnaire statistically. The qualitative findings indicated that determination strategies were used more than social strategies in discovery. Moreover, memory strategies were most frequently used in the consolidation strategies, followed by cognitive, metacognitive, and social strategies. Also, the quantitative study confirmed the qualitative findings and revealed that determination strategies were used more than social ones in discovery strategies, and memory strategies were used the most in consolidation strategies. However, in the quantitative findings, metacognitive strategies were used more than cognitive strategies. These results could help educators and teachers develop policies and strategies to control mobile device use and determine the best practices for implementing self-regulated m-learning and gamification in vocabulary learning and education.
