Résumé

This article discusses the activities of the commercial caravans’ circulation between Tlemcen under the Zianide and the kingdoms of western Sudan, who benefit from the geographical location of the city that formed a central crossroad for commercial routes. In order to guarantee the money flow from the caravans’ circulation heading for the Sahara in the treasury of the Islamic Maghreb countries, the Zianide Sultans strived to ensure security for the merchants and their merchandise crossing the Sahara due the fact that this trade was hindered by many difficulties, ranging from natural factor (water scarcity, sandstorms...) to human factor which consist mainly in the activity of raiders and brigands on the trade route. The travel and geography corpuses presented a clear picture of this activity, stemming from their authors' self experience, since security is highly correlated with the continuity of the caravan circulation, affecting the path of caravans and the vitality of cities like Tlemcen, Sijilmassa and Touat... The importance of security in the commercial routes heading for western Sudan to benefit from the trade of gold and slaves drive the political authority to contribute with the religious authority in imposing security over commercial roads, where the Saints and the Sufis became guardians for the travelers and their merchandises. They were sometimes surpassed, taking advantage of raiders and brigands at the disposal of security, including facilitating the commercial circulation of caravans toward Sudan.
