This paper examines March 2023 U.S. banking failure and its impact on financial stability. Through analysis of regulatory disclosures, literature, and financial data, it identifies a combination of internal and external factors behind the collapse. Internally, the bank relied on concentrated uninsured deposits from the tech sector, invested in long term fixed income securities, and suffered from governance failures, most notably the absence of a Chief Risk Officer. Externally, the Federal Reserve’s rapid interest rate hikes exposed these vulnerabilities, while regulatory reductions weakened oversight. The findings highlight how concentrated funding models and governance gaps can transform monetary policy shifts into systemic threats, underscoring the need for stronger protections to maintain banking stability.
