The concept of Culture Industry was conceived in the technologically developed society, and nowadays it is one of the centerpieces of critical social theory. Unlike the reductive Marxist argument that the ruling concepts of a time are only those that are similar to the dominant classes, the critical theorists predict the ubiquitous presence of technology and of a technocultural consciousness. These forces give birth to a new form of culture that is defined by standardization, historicity loss, and lack of real social grounding. It is in this metamorphosis that the modern societies have perfected the technique of forcing the individual into subservience to the social system, not necessarily through political machinations and some form of authority but through the machinery of values, culture, and socialization procedures.
