Résumé

Abstact The present study aims to test a simple mediation model in which achievement motivation serves as the independent variable, performance on the baccalaureate examination serves as the dependent variable, and cumulative academic achievement serves as the mediating variable. A total of 209 students (108 successful and 101 unsuccessful on the baccalaureate examination) participated in the study, comprising 129 females and 80 males, who were sampled using a cluster sampling method from three secondary schools. Achievement motivation was measured using the Hermans (1970) Achievement Motivation Scale, while annual grade point averages and baccalaureate examination results were collected from student records and official baccalaureate examination result lists, respectively. The study demonstrated that the model explains 73.2% of the variance in baccalaureate examination performance. Furthermore, the mediation was found to be partial, revealing that achievement motivation influences baccalaureate examination performance, although the effect was weak despite being statistically significant. The results also indicated that achievement motivation influences baccalaureate examination performance through the mediation of cumulative academic achievement, with this effect being very strong, accounting for 81% of the total effect of the model.
