This article aims to highlight the historical role of Algerian popular poetry, and to examine the extent of its effective contribution to the development of national consciousness and the mobilization of collective determination, as well as to exposing French colonial practices during the colonial period in Algeria (1830–1962); within this framework, popular poetry is viewed as a mirror reflecting the hopes and problems of society, and as an indicator of the growing national awareness among the population, since it contributed to conveying feelings of rejection and resistance, while reinforcing values of belonging and national identity. Furthermore, maddāḥūn (traditional praise singers) and qawwālūn (oral performers) played a central role in transmitting this poetry orally among people, which contributed to its wide dissemination and its deep entrenchment in daily life, whether in popular ceremonies or within various social spaces, thus making it an integral part of the cultural and social reality of Algerian society during that period; given its positive impact on society, the French colonial authorities became aware of its potential in mobilizing the population and strengthening the spirit of resistance, therefore they imposed strict surveillance on poets and subjected them to various forms of restriction, while also attempting to contain this cultural sphere through efforts aimed at directing popular discourse, distorting its meanings, and weakening its role in preserving national identity.
