Abstract American novel has witnessed an openness to global transformations, particularly following the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center. The strong presence of armed terrorist organizations marked a political and civilizational turning point, during which terrorism became a literary theme featuring Muslim terrorist characters in leading roles. This is what prompted us to delve into the world of John Updike through his novel: The Terrorist, from a thematic and artistic perspective, with the aim of uncovering the artistic manifestations of the theme of terrorism that appear in the novel through textual sequences in which the author explores the details of a pivotal period in American history, seeking its ideological representations and revealing the coordinates of the conflict between the East and the West on the one hand, and terrorism and Islam on the other.
