This article presents a sociopragmatic-stylistic analysis of Elif Shafak’s novel The Bastard of Istanbul, arguing that silence functions not merely as a passive absence of speech but as the central communicative device through which the narrative negotiates historical trauma, cultural identity, and political denial. While existing scholars have extensively examined the novel’s thematic engagement with memory and cosmopolitanism, this study fills a critical gap by deconstructing the specific linguistic and pragmatic mechanics used to encode these themes. To address this, the research pursues four primary objectives: first, to identify and categorize the distinct illocutionary forces of silence within the narrative dialogue; second, to analyze the stylistic markers, such as syntactic parallelism, lexical indeterminacy, and euphemism, that realize these silences textually; third, to examine the pragmatic asymmetry between the characters regarding their usage of the unsaid; and fourth, to propose a functional typology that maps these linguistic choices onto the broader socio-political context of the novel. The investigation is grounded in a qualitative, integrated framework that synthesizes Speech Act Theory, Politeness Theory, and the Sociolinguistics of communicative silence. Conceptualizing silence as an intentional illocutionary move, the approach relies on detailed textual analysis of key dialogues, narrative gaps, and internal monologues. Moving beyond a view of silence as a void, this research proposes a pragmatic typology of silence within the novel, distinguishing between three layered categories. First, the study identifies the “Social Silence of Avoidance”. Through the lens of Politeness Theory, the analysis demonstrates how characters employ negative politeness strategies – such as shifting topics to food or hospitality – to mitigate the Face-Threatening Act of discussing traumatic topics. This form of silence is unmasked not as genuine courtesy, but as a coercive demand for conformity and historical amnesia. Second, the research defines the “Psychological Silence of Trauma,” which characterizes the Armenian survivors and their descendants. The analysis revealed a profound pragmatic asymmetry։ on the one hand, silence is used as a strategic tool of erasure and face-saving, on the other hand, it is viewed as a painful legacy of history, an inability to articulate the unspeakable weight of generational suffering. Third, the paper analyzes the “Political Silence of Denial”. It is identified as an aggressive, agentive form of erasure. The stylistic analysis of Mustafa’s storyline indicates that his long-practiced denial works as a deliberate performance that ends in his suicide, which the study interprets not as a tragic death but as a final act of refusal and moral withdrawal. Significantly, the results reveal a profound pragmatic asymmetry: while some characters utilize silence as a tool of power to maintain a dominant narrative, others experience silence as a painful legacy of marginalization. Ultimately, this paper concludes that using the multifaceted nature of silence Elif Shafak masterfully constructs a narrative where the unsaid carries more weight than the spoken.
