The adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in higher education has reshaped collaborative learning experiences, suggesting new approaches to improve learners’ interaction, motivation, and personalized learning. Despite these advancements in academic environments, various challenges still impede the optimization of group dynamics and effective learner contributions within diverse collaborative learning settings. Through a rigorous synthesis of a total of 35 research works retrieved from three major academic databases (ERIC, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink) covering publications from 2019 to 2025, this systematic review explores AI applications designed to strengthen collaborative learning among university students with actual focus on improving communication, providing feedback and effective assessment, and boosting student engagement. The findings propose valuable perceptions and practical guidance for instructors, educational designers, and policymakers on how to efficiently integrate AI technologies to build more engaging, adaptive, and effective collaborative learning environments. In addition, this review highlights both the strengths, hurdles of AI-powered collaboration, and suggests directions for future studies to address current inadequacies and improve learning outcomes.
