Résumé

The current research adopts the comparative descriptive method to investigate EFL didactics in Algeria by comparing traditional and modern methods at both pre-university and university levels and explore transformative educational reforms. Content analysis of the old and new first-year middle school English textbooks was applied to uncover the current status of teaching English. Results revealed that the Competency-based Approach has dominated the pre-university education landscape since 2002, with a strong emphasis on project-based instruction. Although the introduction of English in the primary school is highly advocated for a successful implementation of EMI at the university, teaching English and French simultaneously in the third grade has increased interference and negative transfer. Hence, it is highly recommended to postpone teaching French to the fourth or fifth grade. Furthermore, the early adoption of EMI is advised to facilitate its implementation at the university level.
