Résumé

This article presents the results of a survey conducted among 30 teachers of French as a Foreign Language in Algerian secondary schools of the wilaya of Oum Bouaghi, Algeria. The study aimed to investigate their practices and perceptions regarding the use of the Arabic mother tongue in the classroom. The findings indicate a frequent, strategic, and purposeful recourse to Arabic, which teachers view as a valuable aid for facilitating comprehension, clarifying instructions, and ensuring effective classroom management. Nevertheless, several teachers also voiced concerns about the potential risk of fostering excessive linguistic dependency among students. The article further analyzes these results and discusses their didactic implications, highlighting the importance of developing a contextualized and balanced pedagogy for teaching FFL in multilingual settings.
