Résumé

In recent decades, the fields of counseling and psychotherapy have undergone significant theoretical and practical developments, prompting renewed discussions about their conceptual and functional boundaries. Both aim to enhance psychological well-being, yet they differ in historical origins, foundational philosophy, objectives, and methodological approaches. Psychotherapy primarily focuses on diagnosing and treating psychological disorders and addressing deep-seated emotional conflicts, whereas counseling emphasizes personal growth, coping with life challenges, and preventive interventions. The emergence of integrative models, evidence-based practices, positive psychology, and digital technologies has increasingly blurred the boundaries between the two disciplines, reflecting a continuum of psychological intervention. In the Algerian context, cultural, social, and institutional factors further shape professional practice, underscoring the need for culturally responsive and ethically grounded approaches. This paper examines the conceptual, functional, and practical distinctions between counseling and psychotherapy, explores contemporary trends and technological innovations, and discusses the implications for mental health practice in Algeria. The findings highlight the importance of integration, clear professional identity, and cultural adaptation in promoting effective psychological care.
