ABSTRACT: During the Islamic rule of al-Andalus—particularly under the Umayyad Caliphate (138 AH/756 CE – 422 AH/1031 CE)—the region experienced a remarkable period of prosperity and advancement across various domains of life. This transformation was driven by a confluence of political, economic, social, and religious factors. Like many societies of the time, Andalusian society was characterized by its ethnic and cultural diversity, comprising Arabs, Berbers, Slavs, Muwallads, and dhimmis. This pluralistic composition gave rise to a distinct social hierarchy: the elite class stood at the apex, including caliphs, princes, military leaders, and senior officials such as viziers, scholars, and jurists. Below them was a middle class consisting of prominent merchants, skilled artisans, and administrators managing state affairs. At the base of the social pyramid were the commoners, who represented the majority of the population. This group included petty traders, itinerant merchants, farmers, shepherds, craftsmen, marginalized groups, enslaved individuals, and even scholars who held no official posts. Despite their limited rights and privileges, and despite bearing the brunt of labor and public service while enduring poverty, marginalization, and various forms of social injustice, this class was far from peripheral. On the contrary, the general populace played a vital role in sustaining the fabric of Andalusian society through their diverse daily contributions, leaving a tangible impact on its social and cultural landscape. The central problem addressed by this study lies in the apparent contradiction between the marginalization of the lower classes in Andalusian society and their indispensable role in shaping its social and cultural identity. To what extent did these groups serve as active agents in the construction and continuity of al-Andalus, despite the absence of formal recognition or substantial privileges? This research adopts a historical-analytical methodology, drawing on relevant literary and historical sources, and integrates a sociological approach to examine the class structure and social dynamics of Andalusian society. The goal is to uncover the substantive contributions of the common people to the shaping of its cultural and societal foundations
