An Overview On The Actual Situation Of Aquaculture In Algeria, Actions And Challenges – A Case Study Of Algerian Northeastern Provinces

Authors : Mouslim Bara .

Abstract

Aquaculture in Algeria is an emerging and rapidly developing sector that has gained significant momentum in recent decades. This survey provides the first comprehensive dataset on fish production across four provinces in northeastern Algeria. The regional strategy initiated by fish department, primarily selects four species: carp, zander, barbel, and bream. The annual fish production reached up to 112 tonnes in 2023, with peak yields observed in April, May, and June. This brief communication provides a valuable establishment for planning future production strategies to strengthen the sector. The key challenge now is to innovate and scale up production—potentially reaching millions of tonnes, through a multidisciplinary approach that engages policymakers, managers, and researchers
