High mortality rates among juvenile Clarias gariepinus fish due to disease pose a major constraint to aquaculture development in sub-Saharan Africa. Excessive use of synthetic antibiotics leads to risks of bacterial resistance and environmental pollution. This study evaluates the effect of crude extracts and the aqueous fraction of Carica papaya leaves on the growth and survival of juvenile C. gariepinus. One hundred and twenty (120) juveniles with an initial mean weight of 19.95 ± 0.70 g were divided into three duplicate treatments: control (T0), crude extract (T1, 3 ml·L⁻¹), and aqueous fraction (T2, 3 ml·L⁻¹). The trial lasted 38 days. The zootechnical parameters evaluated were survival rate, weight gain, and specific growth rate. The highest survival rate was recorded with treatment T2 (92 ± 7.5%), while the maximum average weight gain was also observed in this treatment. These results indicate that Carica papaya, particularly in aqueous fraction form, is an effective natural alternative to synthetic antibiotics in aquaculture.
