Abstract

Seeds of Atlas pistachio (Pistacia atlantica Desf.) were collected from several localities representative of the bioclimatic diversity of northern Algeria. A total, 6400 seeds were selected and divided into lots of 800 seeds for each provenance. Initially, the seeds were sown in the nursery to estimate the germination rate and assess the influence of provenance on germination. Subsequently, different treatments were applied to overcome seed dormancy. These treatments included chemical scarification using sulfuric acid (98% and diluted to 50%) and gibberellic acid (1000 and 500 ppm), as well as cold stratification at 5 °C for 30 and 45 days (hulled and unhulled seeds). The results showed that the pretreatments with sulfuric acid (50%), gibberellic acid (1000 ppm), and cold stratification of dehulled seeds for 45 days have a significant positive effect on germination of seeds from the provenance of Beni S’nouss with a germination rate reached 64.3%, 52% and 69.3%, respectively. For the provenance of Ain Ben khelil, the germination rate reached 54.2% with cold stratification for 45 days of dehulled seeds, and 48.6%with a gibberellic acid (1000 ppm). Whereas, seeds from Ouled Mimoun showed 58.5% following treatment with gibberellic acid (1000 ppm). Other pretreatments applied to the seeds resulted in variable germination responses, ranging from 12% to 28.3%. In contrast, the germination rate of untreated seeds (control) was very low, the highest value not exceeding 34%, recorded for the Beni S’nouss. These findings highlight the importance of seeds provenance, and appropriate pre-germination treatments in improving germination performance.
