Abstract: Developing countries have been granted a distinctive legal position within the World Trade Organization through the Special and Differential Treatment (S&DT) framework, designed to make their integration into the multilateral trading system more attainable. This approach offers a range of advantages, including longer transition periods, exemptions from certain obligations, and technical assistance and capacity-building programs. On paper, the framework appears promising. In practice, however, its impact has often fallen short of expectations. The absence of a clear legal definition of what constitutes a "developing country," together with the largely non-binding nature of many S&DT provisions and the persistent production and technological constraints faced by these countries, continues to limit its effectiveness. Rather than relying solely on these preferential rules, many developing countries have turned toward regional cooperation and collective action. Alliances such as the Group of 77 and China and the African Union have strengthened their negotiating voice while encouraging export diversification and the development of sectors linked to sustainable development. That shift reflects a broader effort to secure a fairer place in international trade, even if the road remains uneven. S&DT undoubtedly represents a meaningful legal step toward greater equity in the global trading system. Still, genuine progress will depend on transforming its provisions into enforceable commitments capable of addressing the development gap and making international trade rules more balanced for all participants. Keywords: Developing Countries; Least Developed Countries (LDCs); Developed Countries; World Trade Organization (WTO); Special and Differential Treatment (S&DT).
