Like other world major powers, India has sought to strengthen its economic partnership with Africa. However, it emphasized a specific model that enhanced historic ties based on solidarity and common anti-colonial struggle in the past and currently on mutual benefits with the African countries, according to official discourse. Like other foreign actors, India attempted to consolidate its military presence in the African region adjacent to the Indian Ocean in particular. To achieve this objective, it moved from providing training to African armies and participating in peacekeeping missions to a direct engagement based on the contribution to fight piracy in the Indian Ocean, building military bases overseas, conducting joint military exercises and selling arms. India’s stake aims at protecting naval routes and reinforcing its military presence in the adjacent Ocean to counter the perceived growing threats from its notably presumed Chinese rival. It aims, also, at boosting New Delhi’s international status and influence in the increasing competition over shaping the world power balance and the related geostrategic changes expected to take place in the near future.
