Energy Transition And Economic Growth Nexus: Empirical Evidence From Algeria

Authors : Arab Zahira .

Abstract

This research aims to assess the relationship between the energy transition and economic growth in Algeria between 1990 and 2022. Taking into account the researchers' views on the structural changes associated with this transition, we have chosen to use the Fourier Bootstrap ARDL model, which examines long-run relationships between variables while accounting for smooth structural changes in the economy. Our findings reveal that renewable electricity output and carbon dioxide emissions per capita have a positive and significant impact on economic growth, underscoring the pivotal role of renewable electricity in fostering future growth. However, this growth remains dependent on fossil fuels. Conversely, renewable energy consumption has an adverse effect due to technological dependence, which is one of the barriers to expanding renewable energy. The study therefore recommends focusing on domestic technology development by encouraging investment in economic projects that promote innovation in renewable energy.
