The Concept Of John Keats’s Negative Capability In Robert Frost’s Poem, “acquainted With The Night”: A Case Of Influence

Authors : Adjailia Loua .

Abstract

This paper examines the Romantic poet John Keats’s concept of Negative Capability and centers its attention on the influence he had on the American poet Robert Frost. Both Keats and Frost are regarded as major influential poets in the literary canon. Hence, it became important to shed light on the two poets and put them under the same umbrella of poetic genius. So, by going through Robert Frost’s “Acquainted with the Night” , this paper strives to bring out his Negative Capability, explain his sense of uncertainty, and then uncover the annihilation of the self amidst the different settings he presents in his poems. This literary investigation, through formal analysis and close reading of some of Keats’s letters, establishes a foundation for understanding his poetic criticism and links those views to Frost’s poem. Other Keatsian terms such as “Disinterestedness” and “the camelion poet” will be explained as well as highlighted throughout the analysis. Finally, this study concludes that despite the dark despotism that might be sensed in Frost’s poem, it is through his use of Keatsian Negative Capability that the poet is able to be in full embrace of life’s mystery and uncertainties.
