ABSTRACT: The Arabic language is considered one of the richest human languages in its capacity to generate meanings and reshape them over time, owing to the richness of its morphological and semantic structures, the breadth of its derivational potential, and its close connection to diverse cultural and social contexts. In pre-Islamic Arabia, lexical items functioned as semantic units that reflected the characteristics and values of the tribal society. However, the emergence of the Qur’anic text marked a pivotal moment in redirecting pre-Islamic meanings and generating new semantic horizons. The semantic development of Qur’anic vocabulary contributed significantly to the transition from a linguistic system rooted in pre-Islamic references to a comprehensive civilizational framework. The Qur’anic discourse is replete with forms of knowledge and profound insights into life and existence. Through its unique rhetorical miracle and remarkable aesthetic richness, the Holy Qur’an revitalized the Arabic language by activating its semantic capacities and rendering it capable of addressing all times and places. This reflects the Qur’an’s substantial role in reconstructing Arab consciousness and transforming language into an instrument for the creation of civilization. In light of the foregoing, the study of the semantic development of Qur’anic vocabulary is not merely a linguistic inquiry; rather, it is an exploration of how meaning is formed and how words evolved from limited expressive tools within the pre-Islamic context into major civilizational concepts that established a new understanding of humanity in particular and the world in general. From this perspective, the present paper seeks to uncover the deep structures that contributed to the semantic transformation of Qur’anic vocabulary from tribal signification to civilizational meaning. In doing so, it addresses the following research questions: • How did the Qur’an engage with the pre-existing Arabic lexicon? • Did the Qur’an abolish the old pre-Islamic meanings, or did it redirect them and generate new civilizational significations? • Does semantic development in the Qur’an represent a civilizational transformation or merely a linguistic shift?
