The Algorithmic Tourist: A Framework For Ai-mediated Travel Experiences In Algeria's Smart Destination Transition

Authors : Benhammouda Amira . Berkat Ahmed .

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between digital infrastructure development and tourism outcomes in Algeria (2010–2024), proposing the "Algorithmic Tourist" as an emerging theoretical construct. Given data constraints (n = 15), we employ Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing and error correction models, establishing a long-run equilibrium between digital transformation and international arrivals (F = 4.87, p < 0.05). A 1% increase in digital infrastructure index associates with 0.34% increase in tourism GDP in the long run (β = 0.34, SE = 0.12, p < 0.05). We transparently acknowledge limitations: "Algorithmic Tourist Engagement" is proxied through available digital indicators given absence of direct AI-tourism metrics in official statistics. Findings suggest that Algeria's smart destination transition remains infrastructure-constrained, with algorithmic mediation emerging primarily through international platform penetration rather than domestic AI deployment. The study contributes methodological transparency for data-constrained environments and identifies specific gaps for future primary data collection.
