Algerian society has experienced significant demographic transformations since the colonial period, manifested in a gradual transition from a traditional demographic regime to a modern one, characterized by declining fertility rates, improved health indicators, and increased life expectancy. This transformation has been closely associated with several key factors, notably the rising educational attainment of women, their integration into the labor market, and the postponement of age at marriage, all of which have contributed to reshaping reproductive behavior and reducing family size. This paper aims to analyze the main determinants of demographic transition in Algeria and to examine its major implications for the social structure, particularly in terms of family structure, fertility levels, and the size of the working-age population, while also exploring future challenges such as population ageing.
