Abstract

Offshore. Abstract This paper presents a comprehensive CFD study on a dual-source marine energy converter. The system inte- grates a cylindrical floating buoy, harvesting wave energy through an internal pendulum mechanism, and a Vertical Axis Tidal Turbine (VATT) utilizing NACA 0018/0021 profiles for current energy extraction. A k − ω SST tur- bulence model combined with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is employed to simulate the free-surface interac- tion. The core of this research focuses on the dynamic cou- pling between heave/pitch buoy motions and the rotor’s performance. Results indicate that the oscillation-induced velocity significantly alters the apparent flow velocity at the blades, potentially assisting the self-starting capabili- ties of the turbine
