The field of pediatric health psychology is vast, multifaceted and multidisciplinary. Encompassing the well-being of infants, children, adolescents and young adults, it focuses on health (for example, the absence of illness, health behaviors and prevention), as well as diseases and injuries (major and minor, chronic and acute). Child health psychology is unique because it is inspired by other specialized areas of psychology, including developmental, clinical, child and adolescent clinical, health, social and family psychology. In collaboration with pediatricians, nurses, social workers, psychiatrists and other health care providers, child health psychologists select and evaluate a variety of problems (for example, compliance, pain, medical stress and trauma, neurocognitive functioning) and design and implement interventions aimed at reducing distress, promoting adaptation and maintaining health. Pediatric psychology offers a professional framework consistent with the themes of this chapter on child health psychology. The complete integration through several disciplines and accents goes beyond the scope of a single chapter. In the current summary of child health psychology, we integrate the diverse literature on the evaluation and intervention of child health psychology within the parameters of three targeted basic hypotheses (social ecology as an organizational framework, the resilience of patients and families, and evidence-based evaluation and intervention are essential for positive results) and three levels of intervention (universal, selected, indicated/clinical) which, according to us, are crucial to advancing the health and well-being of children and their families.
