Self-employment has emerged as a promising instrument for fostering entrepreneurship, encouraging the creation of sole proprietorships, and reducing the size of the informal economy. This article aims to assess the current state of self-employment in Algeria and to examine the contributions and limitations of the mechanisms designed to support its development. The research approach is based on the analysis of official statistics, semi- structured interviews with ecosystem actors, and the results of a field survey conducted among 16 self-employed entrepreneurs. The results highlight notable contributions, particularly the formalization of activities previously operating in the informal sector and the creation of numerous sole proprietorships. However, several constraints persist, including turnover caps, limited market access, and ambiguities surrounding taxation and social security contributions. With only three years having passed since its introduction, it is still too early to judge the status’s full impact. However, its contributions can only benefit the country's socioeconomic development.
