Résumé

Background: Hypertension is a major cardiovascular risk factor that negatively affects Health-related quality of life. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, date on the Health- related quality of life of hypertensive patients are scarce. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate the Health-related quality of life of hypertensive patients compared to that of non-hypertensive subjects and to identify its associated factors in hypertensive patients. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study conducted from September to December 2024 with 340 participants, including 170 hypertensive patients followed at the Mont Amba Hospital Center in Kinshasa and 170 non-hypertensive individuals. Participants were selected by simple random sampling. Data were collected by face-to-face interviews using sociodemographic/medical questionnaires and WHOQOL-BREF on ODK. Analyses were performed with STATA 18.0. Results: Hypertensive patients had significantly lower Health-related quality of life scores than non-hypertensive patients. Factors such as high education level and age below 65 years, employment in the private sector, and certain religions were positive predictors of quality of life. Retirement, a high number of people at home, and taking a large number of antihypertensive tablets were negative predictors of some quality of life domains. Conclusion: Hypertension impairs Health-related quality of life. A comprehensive management approach is important to improve the quality of life of hypertensive patients.
