Context: The prevalence of mental disorders in the Algerian general population is over 0.5%. This increase in mental illnesses and the growing need for care have elevated mental health to a major social issue. To address this, Algeria has taken significant initiatives and committed various resources to improve mental health services for the prevention and treatment of mental illnesses. Objective: The aim of our work was to determine the descriptive profile of psychiatric morbidities at the HDEB-Ouargla Psychiatry Specialized Hospital Establishment over a period of two years. Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study of a sample of 420 patients who consulted and/or were hospitalized at the HDEB-Ouargla Psychiatry specialized Hospital Establishment during the period from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021. Results: The average age of our patients is 33.61 years. 65% are male, and 69.1% are single. 56.4% have a moderate level of education. 76.9% are unemployed. 43.3% use substances (13.3% cannabis). 9.1% have a family history of psychiatric disorders. Agitation was the most frequent reason for consultation. The age of onset of the disorder is before 40 years in 88.9% of cases. 35.5% were hospitalized, with 88% hospitalized at the request of a third party. Schizophrenia was the most commonly diagnosed condition. Significant frequencies were recorded for values that could be risk factors (age between 18 and 25 years, male gender, singleness, unemployment, family history of psychiatric disorders, substance use). Female gender and employment could represent protective factors. Conclusion: At the end of this study, we have an overview of the descriptive profile and diagnosis. This is to enable early diagnosis and appropriate care to improve symptoms, prevent complications, and enhance the quality of life for patients. This is not the case for patients in outpatient care, highlighting the need for further studies.
