Abstract: The study aims to shed light on the earliest archaeological research in the Batna region at the outset of the French occupation, initiated as a personal endeavor by Colonel Jean-Luc Carbuccia (JEAN-LUC CARBUCCIA), commander of the second regiment of the French Foreign Legion. He conducted archaeological excavations at the temple of the god of medicine Aesculapius during the years 1848–1850, alongside field studies that resulted in the creation of the first archaeological map of Batna, as well as a detailed inventory of its archaeological heritage, supplemented with plates and illustrations of significant scientific and documentary value. In this context, Carbuccia authored ten (10) booklets, each dedicated to the study of one of the following archaeological sites: Batna, Lambèse (Tazoult), Timgad, Chémorra, Diana Veteranorum (Zana), Neqaous, Tebessa, Barika, El Kantara, and the Mausoleum of Medrasen, which is currently considered among the lost booklets. These works are of considerable importance for archaeological and historical research, yet they remain in manuscript form, preserved in the archives of the French Institute Library to this day, despite repeated requests by the author to the Ministry of War for their printing and publication. These requests were rejected on the grounds of limited financial resources, in addition to a series of political and military-ideological considerations.
