Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in March 2011, human rights conditions have steadily deteriorated. Arbitrary arrests and detentions, extrajudicial executions, rape, kidnappings, other forms of sexual violence, enforced disappearances, and the practice of torture by the Syrian authorities and pro-government militias (referred to as “Chabbiha”) have been extensively documented. Most allegations of rape and other forms of sexual violence are reported to have occurred during house searches, at checkpoints, and in detention. In some cases, women have been targeted in public or in front of members of their families. In Syria, children are also the victims of tragic human rights violations, mainly killings and maiming, sexual violence, acts of torture, arbitrary detention, as well as recruitment and exploitation by armed groups and forces.
