The Image Of The Muslim Other In Eighteenth-century European Printed Media: ‘neutral’ Gazettes And Pamphlets And The Representation Of Algerians During The Spanish Conquest Of Oran (1732)

Authors : Salmi Abdelhadi Radjai .

Abstract

Printed media, such as gazettes and pamphlets, functioned as key vehicles of news dissemination and the representation of the ‘Other’ in eighteenth-century Europe. Yet, relatively little attention has been paid to how these media represented and perceived the Muslim Other, particularly in specific case studies, and how these media negotiated objectivity while reproducing deep-seated discourses of alterity. This study seeks to examine European printed media representations of Algerians and Muslims through a focused case study: the Spanish conquest of the Algerian town of Oran in 1732. The corpus analyzed is unified by three deliberate and interrelated criteria: all sources address the same historical event; all belong to printed media (gazettes and pamphlets); and all are non-Spanish and non-Algerian in origin. The findings suggest that, although these gazettes and pamphlets that reported on the Spanish conquest are neutral, they nonetheless convey relatively negative portrayals of Algerians, reflecting the deep-rooted prejudices of early modern European societies. At the same time, the analysis identifies discernable signs of a shift in positive perception, with instances of more balanced and, at times, positive representations of the Muslim Other emerging within the same corpus.
