ABSTRACT: This study examines the impact of banking sector development on economic growth in Egypt over the period 1990–2023, within the theoretical debate between financial repression and financial liberalization, particularly the contributions of Ronald McKinnon and Edward Shaw. Using financial depth indicators and the ARDL model to assess both short- and long-run relationships—while controlling for investment and inflation—the results reveal a positive and statistically significant effect of banking sector development on economic growth in the long run, whereas the short-run effect appears relatively limited. Investment shows a strong positive contribution to growth, while inflation exerts a negative impact, particularly at high levels. The study recommends continuing banking reforms, strengthening the role of the private sector, and reducing inflation rates in order to enhance the contribution of the banking system to sustainable economic
