Abstract: This study examines the state of media freedom in Algeria during the two presidential terms of Abdelaziz Bouteflika (1999–2009), drawing on an integrated analytical-critical framework. It advances the central thesis that the Algerian state institutionalized a hybrid model of media control operating through three interlocking mechanisms: legal restriction, enforced through press legislation and penal code amendments; economic domination, exercised via the monopolization of the audiovisual sector and the centralization of advertising revenue; and symbolic coercion, engendering structural self-censorship. The study concludes that the Algerian media landscape during this period epitomizes a "distorted public sphere," wherein formal pluralism is systematically instrumentalized as a legitimizing facade for structural hegemony.
