This article examines the figure of King Alfonso VI of Castile (1065-1109) and his prominent role in the Spanish Reconquista movement. It highlights the political circumstances surrounding his ascension to the throne after civil conflicts with his brothers Sancho and García, which ultimately made him the sole ruler of the Christian kingdoms in the Iberian north. The article demonstrates how Alfonso VI exploited the weakness and division among the Taifa kings in Al-Andalus. He succeeded in imposing tributes (parias) upon them and conquering numerous fortresses and cities, most notably the fall of Toledo in 1085, his greatest achievement, which earned him the title of Emperor. However, this success prompted the Taifa kings to seek help from Yusuf ibn Tashfin, the Almoravid Emir, who crossed into Al-Andalus and achieved significant victories against the Castilians at the Battles of Sagrajas (1086) and Uclés (1108). The latter battle saw the death of Crown Prince Sancho, delivering a fatal blow to Alfonso VI's project and leading to his death a few months later. The article concludes that the conflict during Alfonso VI's reign passed through two main phases: the first (1065-1085) was marked by Castilian superiority and the fall of Toledo; the second (1086-1109) witnessed the restoration of Muslim balance through Almoravid intervention, ending Alfonso VI's ambition to eradicate the Islamic presence in Al-Andalus.
