Abstract: This article studies the role of free schools in Oued Souf, southeastern Algeria, during the Algerian liberation revolution. It examines how these schools withstood French colonial harassment and functioned as part of the local population’s policy of rejecting colonial rule. The study highlights cultural resistance as a method of struggle and an effective weapon against the colonizer’s plans, which sought to distort Algerian identity and erase the national character. The free schools succeeded in achieving their objectives by producing an educated generation grounded in religious and national values, which contributed to supporting the revolution in both cities and mountains within the region and beyond.
